New home prices in the Calgary census metropolitan area fell slightly in March, according to Statistics Canada.
In data released Thursday, the federal agency said prices in the Calgary region dropped 0.1 per cent from February and also by 0.1 per cent from March 2010.
The New Housing Price Index was unchanged in March at the national level following a 0.4 per cent advance in February. Year-over-year new home prices in Canada were up 1.9 per cent.
New home prices have fluctuated slightly over the past year, said Dave Hooge, president of the Canadian Home Builders Association-Calgary Region. “With increasing demand, rising interest rates, threat of both labour and materials shortages and increased levies in the City of Calgary, we could begin to see a more rapid rise in new home prices for Calgary,” he said.
Richard Cho, senior market analyst in Calgary for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp., said new house prices are expected to be relatively flat this year.
