Belize has significant advantages over it’s Spanish neighbors for US and Canadian citizens, yet property in Belize sells for less than the Caribbean average. This paradox is the result of a short-term market inefficiency and price corrections are eminent.
Belize property is more valuable than its neighbors. Belize has the Caribbean’s least expensive properties. Increased awareness by North Americans and specifically Baby-boomers, mean changes to Belize property prices.

Top 3 Reasons to move to Belize!
Ambergris Caye
Tourism is Belize’s No. 1 industry, and Ambergris Caye is Belize’s No. 1 tourist destination. It is also the #1 retirement destination in Belize. It is easy to see why. The Barrier Reef runs parallel to the island of Ambergris Caye, sitting only a half mile (800m) east of San Pedro Town. Ambergris Caye offers miles and miles of white sandy beaches, unforgettable views of the second largest Barrier Reef in the world and some of the best fly- and deep-water fishing in the Caribbean. Ambergris Caye is best known for being one of the top 10 diving destinations in the world, featuring tours to numerous Barrier Reef dive sites as well as the world renowned “Blue Hole”.
In August 2008, Islands Magazine rated Ambergris Caye as one of the Top 10 Island is the world to live on. In September 2009, Islands Magazine rated Ambergris Caye as the #1 Island in the World to retire on. Now is the time to discover Ambergris Caye.
Baby Boomers
The “Baby Boomers” are not a theory or a hypothesis. They are 77 million strong, and 2011 marked the first year of retirement for the Baby Boomer generation. There will be 77 million Boomers (in the US alone), playing musical chairs looking for desirable retirement destinations, and last year was just the 1st year of an 18-year wave of retirees. More than ever before, retirees are looking outside the USA to enjoy their golden years.
And they are all looking for the same desirable characteristics: English speaking, safe and secure, great climate, economically and politically stable, close proximity to the US, same/similar time zone, and it wouldn’t hurt to throw in a beachfront Caribbean location.
There are very few locations that meet these criteria, and among those on the short list are locations like Grand Cayman or the Turks & Caicos, where prices are simply cost prohibitive. Belize has a decidedly unfair advantage when appealing to the baby Boomer generation looking for a desirable retirement destination.
Excellent Retiree Program
The Belize Residency Program enables foreigners to retire to Belize under very favorable guidelines, with status as a Qualified Retired Person. This simple process exempts people from the payment of all taxes and levies on all income or receipts which accrue from a source outside of Belize (whether income is from work performed or an investment). This program also provides a duty and tax exemption on new and used personal and household effects (inc. motor vehicles, boats and aircraft). You must be over 45 to qualify and be able to substantiate a monthly income of at least $2,000 (USD).
